This type of tutoring is for students who are behind in a subject or have learning problems that have developed over time. Instruction is needed to close gaps in specific concepts and skills, particularly in math, reading and writing. Because these gaps form over time, much of this instruction covers material that is below a student’s grade level.

Our goal is to bring the student to grade level by focusing on skills and concepts that are missing. The size of the gap, which is measured by diagnostic assessments, determines how long it will take to reach grade level. Research shows that struggling students typically require about 100 hours of explicit instruction to permanently “rewire their brains” to retain concepts and skills.

Once a student catches up, tutoring can incorporate grade-level skills with academic coaching to ensure continued success and increase the student’s self-esteem.
